The Basics

Every BC Aquasonics swimmer – from recreational to high performance – needs a BC Aquasonics swim cap plus nose clips and goggles. The first time an athlete registers with the BC Aquasonics they will be provided with a free Club swim cap.

How many caps and nose clips do I need? Generally speaking – many! It is best to have 2 of each at any one time. Nose clips in particular are very easy to lose on the bottom of the pool, especially for new swimmers who are not used to clipping them to their suit during break times. For a full season, you will likely need 4 to 8 nose clips, 2 or 3 swim caps, and 2 to 4 goggles.

Training Gear

In addition to the basics, all recreational swimmers will need a swim suit (any one piece swim suit will do) and a towel.

Once a swimmer moves into a competitive program they are required to wear the BC Aquasonics training suit, a club swim cap, Speedo Vanquisher Goggles, and nose clips and carry their equipment in a red Speedo Back Pack.  We recommend that each athlete has two training suits – one for regular use and one for competitions.

For dryland training, athletes will need their own workout wear – shorts, yoga pants, tops, socks, and runners. Skipping ropes, yoga mats, ankles weights, therabands, and other exercise equipment may be required, at the direction of the coach.

All athletes also need a “Goal Folder” – these waterproof folders have pockets to store materials and schedules plus a pad of paper and pen. Goal folders are available to purchase by any BCAQ athlete but are required for competitive athletes.

Club Uniform

The Club Uniform is worn at competitions, during travel, and for special events.

For INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED REC Teams, the Club Uniform is a BC Aquasonics T-shirt worn with a pair of black yoga pants.  A pair of black workout shorts is also required for warm-up at competition.

For COMPETITIVE Teams, the Club Uniform includes a BC Aquasonics track jacket and top (t-shirt for provincial stream/yoga top for national stream), worn with black yoga pants and runners or yellow flip flops. All athletes also need to have a pair of black workout shorts.

Competition Gear

FOR FIGURES
From recreational to national stream, every athlete competing in a figures competition must wear a plain black one piece suit, a plain white swim cap, and plain goggles. Nose clips are also worn for most figures.

FOR ROUTINES
Competition Suits
For the team routine competition, all members of the team will wear a matching suit based on the theme of the routine. Bun covers are worn to keep hair contained. Duets and solos also have theme suits for their routines.

RECREATIONAL TEAM Suits: At this level, this can be a black suit with a bit of sparkle added or inexpensive matching suits picked up at a department store. The coach will work with parents to determine the suit and bun cover.

PROVINCIAL STREAM Suits: In Provincial Stream, most suits are still purchased ready-to-wear from a swimwear store or providers such as Splish. Coaches select the suit design to fit the routine’s theme. These suits are then often bedazzled with rhinestones and sequins to add some extra sparkle and pop. Bun covers are made to match the suits.

NATIONAL STREAM Suits: In National Stream, competition suits are designed under the direction of the coach who works with a costume designer to create unique suits with matching bun cover, to fit the routine theme. Each suit is custom made for each athlete based on her unique measurements.

FOR WARMUP
Traveling teams require numerous matching t-shirts or tank tops – at least one for each day of the competition. A BCAQ travel pack is available with a variety of tops.

FOR KEEPING WARM
BC Aquasonics Aquatic Parkas are optional. These knee length jackets are primarily to keep warm between events at the pool but can also be worn outside (although they are not intended to be winter jacket). BC Aquasonics Hoodies are also available.

Make-Up

For routines, athletes wear waterproof make-up. According to the FINA rules, “theatrical make-up” is not allowed – no Cirque du Soleil faces! Rather make-up usually consists of eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, blush, and lipstick.

Synchro Hair

For routines in competition, synchronized swimmers wear their hair in a bun and gel it to keep it in place while in the water. Click here for instructions on how to do synchro hair.

Your coach will also help the athletes and parents learn how to do synchro hair.
