Thank you Volunteers

Thank you to all who volunteered for the February Meet! Thank you for going with the flow when the schedule was off, for the outstanding food in the judges’ room, for ensuring the right music came on when it was supposed to, for announcing that could be heard in the viewing gallery, for jumping in when needed, and for the many little things that were done without being asked. You made it a great weekend for our athletes. (Photo Credit: Photo Team)

Visiting Coach from China

Those of you who train out of Surrey Sport and Leisure may have seen a new coach on deck. In February, we hosted Summer (Xia) Yu from SiChuan Foliflora Aquatic Sports Training Centre in China. Former coach of Nancy Zhang and Emily Yang on our Junior Team, Summer came to the BC Aquasonics to not only visit her athletes but to promote cooperation between our Club and her Club in China, with the hope that more of her athletes will be able to train with us in the future.

Summer had a great experience with us. “The athletes at BC Aquasonics are always enthusiastic and excited about practices and appreciate their coaches,” says Summer. “I can tell they all love synchronized swimming. I really like the training atmosphere at BC Aquasonics. I am so pleased that athletes and coaches liked me and my trainings. Thank you everyone for the extraordinary experience here. I am looking forward to coming back soon.”

The feeling was mutual. “She is an excellent coach,” says Head Coach Susan Kemper. “It is always great to have someone new who brings new ideas and new ways of doing things. She was very ‘hands on’ with our athletes and in the short time she was here, helped a few of them get over some of their hurdles. We look forward to having her back.”

Summer started synchronized swimming in 1995 and was selected to the Guang Dong provincial team of China the following year. She and her team were three time national champions at China National Championships. She was then selected to China’s Junior National Team from 2005-2006 and was also team captain both years. They won silver in the 2006 FINA World Junior Synchronized Swimming Championships in team event. After retiring due to injury, Summer started coaching at XinChen Sports School. In 2012, she founded of SiChuan Foliflora Aquatic Sports Training Center where, to date, there are over 100 synchro and around 50 speed swimming athletes. In 2015, her Club’s 12 and under team was the combo champion at the National Youth Championships.
